Here's an easy build to use with flame staff. Make sure to give it unyielding, burn charges are still better than brain burst on bosses after you dump your empowered psionics charges into it.
I juggle between staff and brain burst a lot using this build. Melee is borderline irrelevant because you should be using flame staff primary if you're cornered for whatever reason. My suggestion would be a force sword with the block blessing, or my preferred choice, knife as a stat stick for running fast (I even put stamina and run efficiency on mine, but if that's too meme for you, you can make it into a real weapon)
