Humanity (ancient precursor species that created ponies for companionship during the last great golden age in the twilight of our civilization) did something that rewrote/irreparably distorted the laws of nature in order to allow magic to exist. After the cataclysm humanity dwindles and their ineffable and godlike technology stops working, forcing ponies to adapt and assume command over the broken world their creators left them.
