Metroid 2's ending was one of the most incredible gaming experiences of my life. I'll never forget the first time I played it. The tension kept building and building as I took out Zeta and Omega Metroids, encountered the destroyed Chozo statue, watched the Metroid counter go up instead of down, and finally take on the queen. Finally the tension broke: the queen fell, and the Metroid counter went to zero. The music became calm for the first time in the entire game. I approached the mysterious glowing object I'd seen earlier—wondered what it was—it hatched?—it's... helping me? Overcome with a feeling of wonder, I returned to my ship, and let the triumphant credits music wash over me.
Absolute fucking kino. Super Metroid is great, but I have to wonder how much of the emotional connection players missed out on if they didn't play Return of Samus first. You can tell the devs behind the remake didn't "get" Metroid 2, by how they turned the triumphant return to the ship into a boring stressful slog and then shoehorned in Ridley (of course) and sloppily copied Super Metroid's baby-defends-Samus scene. Tonally, a complete miss for this game.
