Blue Santa Claus figurines were made locally in Akron, Ohio in the 1800s by German immigrants who brought Santa Claus figurines to Ohio. The blue color was traditional for the German version of St. Nicholas. According to folklorist Margaret Baker, the appearance of Santa Claus owes much to Odin, the old blue-hooded, cloaked, white-bearded Giftbringer of the north, who rode the midwinter sky on his eight-footed steed Sleipnir, visiting his people with gifts.
