Yeah, but that wouldn't stand up in court as an argument for plagiarism, which is what you're worried about. Toby didn't invent shmups or rpgs so he can't sue people for using or combining either two genres. NTA btw.

Well there's two ways you could go about it. You can either make him look obviously mechanical and play on the fact that the player knows he's not a human, but the other characters don't. Maybe even add in some fear that his friends would hurt him if they found out he wasn't who they thought he was. Or you could make him look human, but just slightly off like Data from Star Trek and have the robot thing be a reveal later.
As a side note. All this stuff about nearly human companion robots, giant cities built on lost technology, and people looking for memories of how to use that tech really reminds me of The Big O. Which might be a fun watch for you if you're into this sort of stuff. Pic related is who your character reminds me of in that show.
