Cons
>Most of the humor didn’t land for me, especially the subplot with Jimmy Olsen and Ms. Teschmacher. The girl carried those scenes, which is surprising considering Jimmy is a comedy actor. The dude did not have the charisma to sell Jimmy’s maxed-out rizz.
>Like I said, the Justice Gang was well-written but the performances were a little disappointing. Guy Gardner was too low-energy, Mister Terrific was too angry/autistic, and Hawkgirl was bland. And while I didn’t mind the hawk screech, those ahegao faces she makes were stupid.
>Metamorpho was an annoying crybaby bitch and the most superfluous part of the entire film, though I reckon some of his scenes must have been cut given the jarring pseudo-introduction of Sapphire Stagg.
>Ultraman was alright, but felt like an afterthought added just so Superman would have someone to punch. Gunn could have streamlined that entire plot by merging Ultraman, the Engineer and Metamorpho into Metallo.
>There are some moments were Gunn strives so hard to be sincere it ends up coming off as irony, like when Lex is threatening the street vendor and he says “serving you food was the greatest honor of my life, Superman!” You can tell he wants that to be a genuine moment, but people in my theater were laughing (and they didn’t laugh at most of the jokes).
>The escape from the pocket dimension was boring CGI sludge, from the awfully fake-looking baby Joey to the eyesore proton river sequence.
>Lex’s exposition/comic relief techies were annoying.
>I did not care for the “Kryptonians are evil” twist.
Still 8/10 and well worth the watch.
