>I realized I was 50% done which was a surprise
I've had a similar experience (but without such a 'meh' reaction; I thought the opening was necessary for the plot). This is one of the things that makes me believe that the writing is good, followed by the relative lack of errors and the fact that these highly emotional moments don't cross into 12-year-old's tryhard prose.

Normally I'd be the first to make that argument, but here I thought it didn't cross any lines. Maybe it was more tolerable for me, since I liked the internal struggle here.

No! The "worse" or simpler premises arguably need good writers more than the easy ones if the fic is to be any good.

We did that already. It's one of the best fics the bookclub has ever read, imo. I personally still have (Daetrin's) Triptych a little higher due to it having a stronger connection to the show and using canon characters, but I can't criticize or even disagree with anyone picking Cartography as the best fic on the site. The romance there is a lot better, and the story is more brave in several aspects, almost always nailing the execution perfectly.
