Comedy stopped being things happening out there in the physical world and started being conflict in systems of symbols and beliefs. The joke is funny because the person doesn't realize how stupid they are for thinking and behaving differently than me, rather than because the person has had similar experiences as me and now realizes how funny those experiences were.
