The distinct mechanic it's the mothership construction, in the demo you start with a core module, there are a lot of different modules, structures point defense armament and you have to construct your ship with them, in order to have ship building capabilities, firepower and in general economy.
You can build in 3d, so your mothership can be a space station, or a battleship or what you want to be.
