You're talking about an 8e or 16e card, those disk shelves break out the lanes and switch them so you can add gobs of spindles

I just sold my 22TB HDD's to buy more u.2's since I have xeon scalable servers with hot swap U.2/U.3 backplanes that pack 12 drives in 1 U
For the house, I run RAIDZ1 of 3x 8TB U.2's
For this streaming site I am starting, it's RAIDZ2 of 6x 4TB U.2's since random iops is more important than total capacity and if it takes off, I can add more in the empty slots.
Probably gonna run Intel GPU's for media encoding.
