I use a lot of battlemaps but usually just to show the general layout of an area and of course if a fight actually breaks out. I wouldn't get them to move their token up to the king of whatever, but have seen games online where some people do. I find it equally weird. A nice pretty battlemap adds a lot to a combat encounter imo.
