Sadly, greed might play a big role into the ordeal you just described...

But to emphasize more on the most important part of your post, I'd say that Vought with the Iconic F4U CORSAIR and their F8 CRUSADER just to name a few, being as old as 1917, and North American with their Most Iconic P51 MUSTANG, plus the model you described, to finish with the Republic Aviation Valkyrie....
The biggest shame is that they thought that merging corps, or giving more subsidies to competitors would surpass what they had in the first place...
A rich groupment of corporations each having their own views and designs rivalling for the best performances...
Instead they headed toward a monolithic mindset of design as displayed by the latest project contestants.... YF-22/23 & YF32/YF35 to name just a few...
Guess the F47 being handed straight to Boeing will avoid such things but given the current context, who knows when the first flight will happen...
Boeing... Another gem that went overboard in the last decade at bare minimum...

It's one more reason to observe Politicians with "a special eye" and most of all, to never trust them because the only inclination they have, are with themselves, and not the betterment of tech marvels from a purely technical aspects, nor even the living condition of the people they were appointed for...
