I just can't stand the feudal Japan setting. It's so overdone in games these days and doesn't seem like the kind of vibe I want in a Disgaea experience. Anime parody + Cartoon western-horror/afterlife themes would be how I describe the first 4 games, but it seems like 5 and onward have gone overboard with the generic anime tropes.

Go for it! Ironically it took me the least time to 100% out of all the entries I platinum'd. Might have been because I knew what I was doing after getting through 5, 4, and 2; But thankfully there's not as much side-shit you have to worry about in D1. Just level and reincarnate characters, farm innocents and level items, EZ!
