Dying is possibly in the top 10 worse things that can happen to you in a war, but it certainly isn't #1. There are other consequences like a strain on relationships, loss of property (something that was the cause for the first Fairy War), lifestyle compromises: a fairy isn't going to stick around for two years in a trench unless she's committed enough to something that it's actualized to her memory.
