The more he moved away from MGS and the team around him that worked with him and had the chemistry to make it all special, the worse his tendencies became, and in such a hyper-informational digital age it's easy for anyone to see those tendencies.
He's not a visionary or a masterful storyteller he's just a dude that's pretty creative, bold to the extent of being unafraid to try silly things, probably partly because his fanbase will interpret some meaning to them when he's actually just doing silly shit because he can, and highly consumptive of media which he will then shamelessly apply to his own works.
None of that is bad but it's not incredibly notable and when you have retards pretending he's some god-tier kinoman yes that will be divisive.
