When the PS1 was new I had a strong aversion towards MGS1 because I thought lots of early 3D-games looked ugly compared to the best 2D-games had to offer.
But more importantly I thought it looked slow compared to the pre-Solid Metal Gear games or other games in general.
And all the cutscenes that all the advertising and demos had did not improve my impression of the game feeling slow and unsatisfying.

And I genuinely could not care about the game's story. So that crap never did anything to compensate for my above problems with MGS.
I still struggle to comprehend why he is treated as such a dev legend. The original Metal Gear games are kind of neat but they're also very short games with fairly small scopes.
Snatcher is rad though but it's also nothing like any of this other games and I don't think it has much to do with why people praise him.

Kojima, much like George Lucas, is an unreleting genius incapable of creating anything that is not the highest, avant-garde tier of KINOGRAPHE.
MGSV and PW are his prequels, his very best work and also mocked by low IQ plebs who get their opinion from obese, cynical Youtubers who have failed at every creative project they've ever worked on.

MGS5 is good. Almost great I would say. It just lacks some essential features that elevate the MGS franchise to a state of art - such as nice 20-30 minutes cutscenes, CODEC calls, more environments (going from snow, desert, jungle and boat to only having desert and jungle is a big stepdown from 4) and most importantly japanese humor. It also feels more like a chore by the end, the last act was clearly rushed in, whereas in the previous games everything was meticulously planned and executed.
