Sounds like the automaton need a fast moving unit that flanks or to throw more grenades.

Not to be smug but the first game both had dogs for the cyborgs AND the standard 'devastators' of that game shot grenades at you instead of hitscanning you with lasers. Timed grenades mind you that you could avoid which turned the game into a mix of a bullet hell and a twin stick shooter on higher difficulties, man it was good.
