You could maybe say it's darker than the older generation remember Superman and Batman being. The problem with this is that generational issue happened decades ago when Batman 89 came out and the boomers experienced a darker Batman for the first time (even though he'd been darker in the comics for a bit before that) because their last experience with Batman was the Adam West Batman. Even Superman Returns was rather dark. So even from that angle it doesn't work.
