Case in point: the most, and I mean most by a HUGE MARGIN, the most profitable product Wizards of the Coast, makers of Magic the Gathering cards, ever made were their stupid fucking card-crossovers with existing IPs
Pic related, a shitty crossover with The Walking Dead, that every veteran player HATED because it wasn't just a vanity card/alt art (like the Godzilla cards) but a real card that was ruining the atmosphere of the game with modern/contemporary settings
This fucking thing was the most profitable thing WotC ever made up until that point. No contest, it outsold everything they had ever made up until that point. Normies who just wanted slop that they recognized ate it up, and veteran players who have been playing for years got completely outclassed
the honest truth is you are massively, massively underestimating how many normies with disposable income there are. the "loyal" veterans of a hobby are peanuts compared to them.
