S+M1 is not the be all end all to Serious Sam combat. You will die if that's the only thing you do. The game is more like tug-of-war where you're fighting for control of the battlefield. You need to push forward aggressively sometimes so that you have plenty of room to retreat. Also proper strafing is way more important than running backwards.
