There was only ever "three" waves,

The first wave is a fraudulent retroactive highsight about low fi dirty thrash bands that have no real black metal in them.
The second wave was a mistake about the true intention of black metal, inflicted upon the genre because of the jailing of Snorre (the true mastermind behind black metal), it became either melodramic saccharine tripe such as Dimmu/CoF or the "primitive" bands that made overglorified punk tunes such as Darkthrone.
The "third" wave, is in reality the first true wave, or rather it was a return to what should have been black metal to begin with - a truly dark and abyssal form of metal. It was influenced by Parabellum, birthed by Snorre, and reborn by Deathspell Omega.

Real black metal is an ouroboros where the third wave is both the first and final wave. Everything else is merely the misunderstanding from lesser minds.
