Because the game's tutorial is extremely bare bones. The game itself tells you jack shit what the stats actually do other than the bare necessity. If it wasn't for external sources nobody would realize the sheer amount of variables the Wits stat provides. The game doesn't even tell you that guts reduces Stamina consumption. The game does a poor job of telling you what stats to train too.
