The Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem has important religious connotations as it's where Muhammad ascended to heaven. Palestine or the idea of "Palestine" or how that idea fits into a larger story is very important even if Palestinians as people are just cannon fodder for this grand narrative. (People live in stories.)

Political Islam as practiced by the Muslim Brotherhood and the Shia offshoot of that ideology in Iran can be thought of as the equivalent of the European counter-reformation, and doubling down on religious dogma to push out the influence of the West (and the influence of secularism and rationalism). Destroying Israel and reclaiming Islamic sovereignty over Al-Aqsa is crucial to this because it will lead to the redemption of Islam after centuries of decline and weakness. It has another element with Iran because it's a Shia country so if THEY can do it, then they also checkmate the Sunnis who oppressed them for many centuries.
