I was just drifting in and out of sleep, you know, that fuzzy half-awake state, when something caught my eye. At first I thought it was just a trick of the light, but there, in the corner of the room, a dark shape stood totally still. It looked sort of human, but I couldn’t make out any features, just a blurry outline that gave me the creeps.
My heart skipped a beat, and I blinked a few times, hoping it would go away. When I opened my eyes again, I swear it was staring right back at me. I tried to tell myself it was nothing, just my brain playing games, but my skin was crawling.
I blinked a final time and the shape was gone. The corner was empty and quiet, like nothing had ever been there. Was it real, or did I imagine the whole thing?
