Thematically, it's way more interesting. Undertale kinda was bioshock/kotor 1 tier morality "are you a murderer, a super murderer or saint Jesus the first" and relied a lot more on WOOAAAWGGH LEMME SUBVERT RPG TROP3. And more or less despite the lauded pacifist shit it pretty much just is the SMT devil recruiting with a plotline taken from moon. It really relies too hard on metabullshit and expectations of the genre. It's also obnoxiously preachy to a fault and beats you over the head with it. It doesnt let you ever draw your own conclusions. It's strength mostly comes from the characters which Toby wrote strongly
Deltarune has more to say. And says more interestingly
>determinism/fatalism
>issues of fighting roles people have put you into (Spamton, Kris, Noelle, Lancer, Susie hell even Ralsei all share this through line)
>issues of growing up as an awkward weird teen and not belonging (Susie, Kris and Noelle)
>dangers of self inserting and destroying a character and a story just so you feel like you belong
It combines interesting character writing with a less obnoxiously preachy story with a lot more substance to it. Even if it's still riffing off Moon a bit.
Hell the Dark Worlds themselves are waaaay more interesting a concept than the underground ever was.
I do have some shit to shovel on Chapter 3 tho
Five Zelda sections and a shitload of warioware followed by a short and linear dark world with barely any exploration. Had to redo the final sword thing because the egg was then unobtainable which pissed me off. Tenna himself was a fun fight.
I think I enjoyed it but a lot of the chapter feels like filler in a bad way with the side content draining the main like gameplay loop.
Knight caused me to drop the game for a bit gonna try redoing it but the Egg stuff pissed me the fuck off so then having a ball crushing superboss It was too much but hopefully I'll overcome it this go around
