Shuji twisted overprotective love for Lalah is similar to Akio twisted love for Anthy, Shuji love in particular went "Beyond the Time", never ending mobius strip of killing her to clean her mess over and over since thats how its meant to go, thats what the gundam says has to be done.

Machu love for Shuji actually reached him however and broke this chain, hence Lalah's chains breaking apart after Shuji finally falls for Machu after her meta speech on Newtypes not needing to fall for the same cynical chain of fate they carry. Her song is literally "Beyond the Stars" an obvious parallel to Beyond the Time, which describes her love reaching Shuji no matter the distance. In essence Shuji is both Atomsk and a more positive Akio.
