I was playing Troy total war and realised that the griffons are the origin myth for the modern dragon myth. As they live in caves in mountains and hoard gold, prey and eat cattle and sometimes men and of course fly . They also get their gold stolen by a tribe of one eyed people called the Arimaspi.
Now 40k is fantasy in space partly so we should actually have griffons instead of dragons. And Griffons are pretty standard chaos creatures being a mix of different animals.
So a true 40k Dragon should be a large fire breathing griffon, with an ensalved one eyed people serving them. Traditional fantasy dragons simply don't fit 40k
