This always feels like overcompensation. As if, God forbid, you're an Asian-American who has salt, pepper, and paprika on your shelf instead of coriander or curry powder that isn't in English. My grandparents came here from Italy, but I love making Irish food. Shepherd's Pie was one of the best things I had ever tasted because it was never made for me once growing up.
"Fresh Off the Boat" feels like one of the few stories about modern immigrants that feels accurate. Every single one of the kids has no interest in their Asian heritage, the main character is obsessed with hip hop, the dad is fulfilling his dream of owning a western-themed restaurant, and the mom constantly wants her kids to succeed in America.
