Conservatives are in denial about modernity. When traditional bourgeoisie society and faith in the church starting breaking down through historical traumas and revolutions of the 19th century, artists began to explore how we can still have aesthetic experiences and make meaning in the absence of traditional authority. Conservatives just deny that there was ever any problem with society, and instead blame outside influence corrupting society like Jews or Freemasons, or Communists. They aren't able to come up with any interesting answers to the problems of modernity because they're in denial about the problems themselves and their only answers are to return to an idealized image of the past, or to blame an external group. Same reason why they can't critique or engage with most modern art beyond calling it ugly.
