I think alot of the games problems derive from them having a split focus between a rpg, base builder, and strategy game. If they went deeper with any of the mechanics. Like doing formations for units, having more than a handful of actual quests. Deeper combat mechanics, more city building mechanics, and the sort of trimmings you expect for the genre.
Instead, as someone's mentioned it ends up wide, but not deep. Not that I don't like it, definitely worth playing especially at it's price point.
