Kenshi rides on its fantastic RPG combat system. Everything else is just a fluff excuse to get into battle. The world building is also excellent, and the modding scene. Not bad for a one man game, it's a good indie to sink some time into and discover the world. The sequel should be kino. Stop being such a nothing's good enough faggot, all video games are shallow, it's a limitation of the format.

I personally love Kenshi, but the novelty does wear off once you realize the cheese strats. Even when you avoid the cheese strats sometimes they come to you (getting enslaved). Towards the end of me playing it I started making it so dismemberment and death was extremely prevalent and still my town was completely impenetrable by even the largest raids with modded enemies.

I have an extra 200-300ish hours from playing offline on deployment with a pirated copy. Felt like I did everything I needed to and there wasn't much left to do. I killed every UC and HN city I could and downloaded mods to make it so I could permanently destroy the cities. Restarted like 8 times and did every run I could think of.

I'm pretty autistic but I've tried multiple times to get into this game and couldn't do it.
First 30 hours are just letting yourself get beat to near death over and over by bandits until you can build up enough to fight slightly stronger bandits.
Build a base outside in early game and you'll just get your ass kicked instantly.
If you sit in town too long because you aren't strong enough to actually fight anyone there is a significant chance of bandits walking in and killing all the shopkeepers fucking you over even more.
May be the grindiest game i've ever seen. I'm still not even sure what the game or world is supposed to be about because i've never survived consistently enough to explore anywhere.

Yeah, I fell for that one. The fanbase excuses every shortcoming or oversight as something soulful or deep. Every recommendation involves breaking the game or abusing a mechanic in one way or another (sneaking, kiting into guards, perma-mining...), you're consistently punished unless you do that. Dying to cannibal fogmen was pretty cool though.

I think alot of the games problems derive from them having a split focus between a rpg, base builder, and strategy game. If they went deeper with any of the mechanics. Like doing formations for units, having more than a handful of actual quests. Deeper combat mechanics, more city building mechanics, and the sort of trimmings you expect for the genre.

Instead, as someone's mentioned it ends up wide, but not deep. Not that I don't like it, definitely worth playing especially at it's price point.

You're a mindless golem who can only do what he's told. There are plenty of end goals if you're willing to go out and find challenges instead of relying on being told what to do. In one game I trained up a party of people each skilled in a different weapon type, and went around the map looking for the toughest dudes. They fought and killed the toughest bosses and all their minions in the Cannibal Plains, Arach, and the Ashlands. With these great evils defeated, they decided to retire with all the wealth they looted. In another playthrough, I made a large party of freedom fighters. Eventually they made their way to the hidden town of Spring in Stobe's Gamble, and signed up with the Anti-Slavers. From there they went on a righteous campaign against the United Cities and Holy Nation, killing all their leaders and their samurai underlings. Eventually the whole map was liberated and in the hands of free peasants. Another example is you could try to build your own big self sufficient settlement, but I find that boring so I've never done it.

Yeah got it during a sale. It feels like people are more in love with the concepts of the game than the game itself. The lore and general art style and some mechanics are are really cool. But the game itself feels really amateurish, level design is terrible, presentation is crap, and it's super fucking ugly even for its time. It feels like some early source mod, like the devs had grand ideas but lacked the skills and resources to translate them into a proper game.

I like it a lot and have over 400 hours in it. With that said the Vanilla game can be bizarrely shallow and mechanics you'd expect the game to have are conspicuously absent. Most people I know who've played Kenshi end up asking how to enslave or recruit captured NPCs only to learn that you can't without a mod. A mod that happens to be the most popular on the workshop because it adds another much needed incentive to explore, fight and build a base in the game.

The proper way to play Kenshi is to make yourself Kenshiro by altering your stats and giving yourself high martial arts, then just wandering around and having a little adventure for yourself.

You can still absolutely die as a lone wanderer, no matter how strong you are, but it's a fun way to play.
