Re could not find the strength to answer them. His jaws shook, his limbs trembled as the poison seized hold of his flesh even as the Nile in flood seizes hold of the land of Egypt. At last, he managed to still the racing of his heart and summon his followers, calling out, ‘Come to me, you who were created from my limbs, who came forth from me!’ When his followers had gathered round him Re told them what had happened: ‘I know in my heart that something deadly has bitten me, but I did not see what it was. I only know that it was not something that I myself have made. I have never experienced suffering like this. I am sure it would not be possible to endure more severe pain.’
Re was profoundly shocked that he should have suffered such an attack. His Great Name ought to have ensured that such a thing could never happen. In desperation, the stricken god summoned his children, especially those gods who were skilled in magic and healing words. Not one of them was able to help their father. At last, Isis came, she who could give the breath of life with her mouth, who could drive away pain with her spells, who could bring the dead back to life with her magic words. She said, ‘What is it, divine Father?’ And Re told her what had happened to him. He continued: ‘I am colder than water, I am hotter than fire. All my limbs sweat yet I am shivering. My eyes are dim, I cannot see the sky. My face is bathed in perspiration just as if it were summertime.’
