In the best case (Mariner profession, Art O' Crabbing, and sashimi-ing the cheaper fish), each crab pot can make about 106g per day in the ocean or 94g in freshwater. That still requires you to go there every day and swap out the bait, which takes longer the more pots you have. Instead of putzing around with bait, you could take 30 minutes to instead catch a fish and smoke it. Each smoked Super Cucumber is worth 1500g, equivalent to 15 crab pots. A smoked Catfish is 1200g, or 12 crab pots. Even Largemouth Bass, which you can catch year-round regardless of weather, are equivalent to 6 crab pots. Or if you really want to fishmaxx, take some Quality Bobbers to the volcano caldera. Even a single Lava Eel is 4200g when smoked, equivalent to 42 crab pots. If you spend all day there, you can easily catch 40+ Lava Eels and rake in 168,000+ gold.
