It's not really a stretch, the early 80's more or less invented "let's make garbage sequels for cash" trend that has infected everything. Rocky, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th were the biggest offenders, unless you're old enough to remember the absolute MOUNTAIN of direct-to-VHS Disney sequels churned out in the 80's and 90's.
I'm much more impressed by Twin Peaks ending with "I'll see you again in 25 years" and then season 3 coming out exactly 25 years later.
