I never got staggered despite having light armor (Thief set) because armor actually works in Dark Souls 3, unlike Dark Souls 2 where a single base game early enemy will stagger you with a sword swing while you are using a great hammer.
With Iron flesh I can completely tank through one of the hardest ecounters in game by moving tactically and using lures, despite having no heals, because damage reduction actually works in Dark Souls 3 unlike Dark Souls 2
