I don't speak Japanese. I learnt the basics, how to order food, directions, please thank you etc. Even in remote areas people spoke basic English which I was suprised at. They seemed very happy when I used what little Japanese I knew. On that particular day we'd bought some heat packs as it was colder than we'd expected and I said to the elderly shop owner Samui which meant cold and she was laughing and saying the same thing.
