My dumb highschool headcanon was that they were innocent/neutral humans that died in such a horrific and unfair way that God took pity on them and gave them a pass into heaven, but they were spoiled up there and eventually had to go back down to prove themselves. I got it from the Fallen Angel ED, could be total BS though.
