I disagree. Although I've switched more from anime to manga/koreaslop scrollers, I would consider myself a fan. Symbolism is just one thing that I don't find valuable in a show.

This is going to be a bit off topic, so apologies, but in the field of movies, some people say they found Alien more enjoyable than Aliens because of the symbolism. The white all around Nostromo symbolising virginity and the blood splatter of Kane on those white walls symbolising deprivation thereof, the ship's AI being called "Mother" and the xenomorph being called "Kane's son", and everything else about motherhood they crammed into the story, I just didn't find compelling. Compared to that, Aliens is much simpler. No great symbolism, just a banger movie full of action. I think I've rewatched the plural a dozen times and the singular maybe once.

I just don't consider it a particularly enjoyable experience to have to delve into deeper meanings to derive enjoyment from a story. And if I do spend the time I don't find the story more enjoyable as a result. Symbolism in a story is something for pseudo intellectuals to argue over, and it doesn't enhance the story itself.

I have 5 episodes in God Tier but I’ll give it to Ghost: The Phantom of Daten City. It was more low key and emotionally complex like Vomiting Point but it also features the girls more heavily. I liked seeing Stocking be cute and in love, and Panty’s protectiveness over her sister, Chocolat is a great track, the atmosphere was great, and the ending reveal and climax touched me. yeah they still know how to have fun with their animation. Animation today could use a little bit more wackiness. Maybe the emergence of digital tools has lead to the industry becoming a bit too "in the box" as opposed to "outside of the box" in terms of how animation is approached. But that's also a bit of a generalization, I really like what Shaft does with their more modern style.

I'm a gigantic fan of Imaishi's work for his entire career, but trigger doesn't have as good as an input as he does.
Yoshinari's LWA is great but BNA was mediocre.
