decomposed granite. basically crushed up rock with specific sizes mixed together after they are screened. The sharp broken edges and fines (smallest bits) help it all lock together into a tight mass under compaction so it doesnt move. DG is a generic term we use in the SW, but its used for road base and under footings and foundations, under anything masonry really to provide a stable base. It drains water pretty freely as well and doesnt shrink and swell like a typical soil would. It basically just looks like sand or dirt, but its special engineered dirt. No organic materials to break down and create voids either.
