I think a lot of the inaccurate depictions are due to the fact yurop, or at least the sections of yurop that saw a lot of warfare among the major yuro powers is pretty flat. like northern italy has mountains but no one thinks about famous battles in northern italy or swizerland.
There is a lot of flat land in bongland, frog land, the low countries, nazi land, poland and into commie land.
The east coast of the US has (and especially during the 1700s had) a lot of hilly areas due to the Catskills, appalachian and palisades as well as heavily wooded areas compared to yurop at the same time
