if you only have a mouse instead of a tablet, use the quadratic bezier tool. It's called differently in most software, arc tool, spline, curve tool, etc. This is what’s usually used in animation clean-up.

Then why are you using a reference that doesn't clearly show what you want to learn? Don't make things harder for yourself, bridgman's book has great figures that exaggerate the torso. Then use a nude reference, and lastly, go back and try the reference you originally chose.
