In theory, it should throw off the thermal image of the tracker to a point further away from the tank, avoiding a direct hit from the missile. In practice it doesn't work like that at all.
As far as I understand, the CLU doesn't target the point with the highest thermal signal. It creates a thermal image of the target, i.e the whole vehicle, and calculates the center of mass of the thermal image, and when the missile is launched it updates that image every few ms as it reaches the target. Because the bucket is far from the center of the image and prob has an anomalous high signal (kinda like an outlier point in statistics), I bet it can be easily filtered.
pic related is a Belarussian attempt at the ideia, but russian similars have been spotted in the battlefield. It's mostly a dead trend, I haven't seen it since 2023 at least.
