Wut? Depends on the country, obviously. I didn't bother to apply for a new passport before I actually started travelling again. Lived without one for like 2 years. Never bothered to get one of those standalone ID cards either. I have a driver's license but that's not an "official" ID here (even though it's accepted as such almost everywhere).
Pretty Funny how Europeans always think things work exactly like they do in their home countries now that we're all part of a happy little EU family.
