20 years ago, it was standard for all multiplayer games to have dedicated servers. you could host them locally and play them without the dev's permission. now, almost every single new multiplayer game is 100% run by the company themselves. if they shut down their servers, it's game over. you don't think that in another 20 years time, they won't come for singleplayer games too without user rights pushback? it'll be standard for all games to require dev servers to work. you won't be able to pirate shit.

Robust servers are only needed if you aim to handle a robust number of people on stable connections. You can sacrifice all of this and just leave it as some variant of peer to peer instead. And then the hardware of the players will be the bottleneck, and maybe that'll play like shit or maybe it'll work if they've got decent hardware. But that's none of your concern.

Even if a corpo were to clone an indie product, they'd fill it with their slop and make it shit. So people would just end up buying indie games anyway.

In any case I'm not even arguing for abolishing copyright laws, so I have no idea who you're arguing against.
I'm just saying I'm in favour of returning the duration of copyrights back to 14+14 years, or even half of that if possible.

โ€œIf nature has made any one thing less susceptible than all others of exclusive property, it is the action of the thinking power called an idea, which an individual may exclusively possess as long as he keeps it to himself; but the moment it is divulged, it forces itself into the possession of everyone, and the receiver cannot dispossess himself of it. Its peculiar character, too, is that no one possesses the less, because every other possesses the whole of it. He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. That ideas should freely spread from one to another over the globe, for the moral and mutual instruction of man, and improvement of his condition, seems to have been peculiarly and benevolently designed by nature, when she made them, like fire, expansible over all space, without lessening their density in any point, and like the air in which we breathe, move, and have our physical being, incapable of confinement or exclusive appropriation. Inventions then cannot, in nature, be a subject of property.โ€

Are you reminding yourself of that? Tell me, how exactly does the European Union "gain more power" by regulating video games? Them gaining more power implies that before this happened they couldn't just decide at any time to hold a vote and say

Itโ€™s a consumer initiative that demands that when publishers disconnect servers, they should provide a way for games to remain playable in the cases where they're sold as a product (for example, Diablo 4)

Some furry narcissistic sociopath (yt: PirateSoftware) has created a video with a bunch of false information, shitting on the campaign 10 months ago. This effectively killed the momentum of the arriving signatures and it stopped at 350k/1000k and only rose up to 450k in the next 8 months.
Now the leader of the campaign has responded and explained how the furry is wrong, so people are signing again and spreading the word.

tldr: Sign it if you're in EU or UK, or spread the word around if you want video games to be preserved like any videogame released before 2010 is.

More laws is by definition.... More laws. Otherwise you're arguing that the government whose criminal law is structured like this:
>Law 1: You cannot kill by beheading
>Law 2: You cannot kill by stabbing
>Law 3: You cannot kill by slashing
>Law 4: You cannot kill by shooting
Has more power than the government who simply states
>It is unlawful for an individual to kill or mortally injure any other.
And trust me, it really doesn't.

YES! Gaming is the most profitable entertainment industry on Earth, ahead of movies, music and literature.
>that will have no impact on small developers at all
It's an Eol plan for all future made games it's not to go back and solve the problem for older games, Indie games will adapt or they won't deserve to be in the market.
>>its for the good of gaming dude, dont you want to play The Crew 1?????
YES! It's a good game that I want to continue playing. That aside The Crew is what's called the "Test case" you have to have an example in this scenario situation and it fits the bill. Yes I want to continue playing games that I PAID MONEY FOR. What's wrong with that? If you're selling me a rental, tell me it's a rental not a product.

You can't rely on micro-states to bring this home it has to be the big countries, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and the medium sized countries Poland, the Baltics nation states.
Part of this really is a language barrier issue even though a lot of people speak and understand English, they still prefer their own language and their own language e-celebs which is fair so it's on those people to start talking.
Ross has contacted many European Youtubers and they didn't respond or said they were interested and didn't respond after the initial contact. It's a shame but you can't make people sign without force.

>>713897215
Not anymore. Once 7 countries reched the threshold now you only need raw signatures, no matter the EU country. We can get for example 10 million signatures from France/Germany(biggest countries in the EU) and that would make the initiative pass since it already has 7 countries that passed the threshold.

Yes. The EU is legally REQUIRED to follow up on a Citizens Initiative if it reaches thresholds.
But either Parliament or the Commission is capable of following up on an Initative regardless, if they still deem that necessary.

Given that both Parliament AND the Commission have over the course of the last year already begun to bear down on several malpractices in the videogame industry, the odds of them choosing to do so of their own volition are decidedly non-zero.

The quickest rundown possible.

We don't buy games, we buy a license of use that can be invalidated at any time.

This initiative will force the corporations to give us the possession. They cannot take it away from us legally.

Also games that die after the server shutdown should have an end-of-service plan that makes them playable offline.

If are are from EU, sign the petition. With an eID it takes like 5 clicks. If we keep the momentum, there is a chance we win.

>Why would someone who isn't an unironic shill/troll be against it

Here's a copy pasta from last thread:

There was a study done which made it clear that the average "age" of a video game people are playing is somewhere between 7 and 10 years.
This, to publishers, means that they're not only competing with current games but also their old titles. Which they see as a loss of profit.
For example, there's at least 100k people still playing Diablo 2 (combined across the original and remaster). Publishers believe that this is 100k-200k less players playing Diablo 4, which is a loss of at least 5-10 million USD. Which is why, in this case, Blizzard has released Diablo 4 with always-online DRM and mostly server-side game logic. This way when they end the game's servers, their customers will be "forced" to buy Diablo 5 or Diablo 6.

For one the increased reliance on service games as a loophole to any potential change and for those who don't the possibility of reduced online elements.
Another loophole in killing the original game and releasing an inferior yet cheaper port/remake since the current stipulations only cover the game and not specific versions.
The fact that this initiative calls for property to be taken from developers under specific conditions, i.e. giving up server tools, which could compromise other games.

There's a handful of reasons to be against it but there aren't any reasons to be for it that wouldn't just be solved by not buying those bad games.

English only started getting popular in schools with the arrival of American TV and the Internet. EU boomers don't know English since all their content is either native or dubbed.

Wut? Depends on the country, obviously. I didn't bother to apply for a new passport before I actually started travelling again. Lived without one for like 2 years. Never bothered to get one of those standalone ID cards either. I have a driver's license but that's not an "official" ID here (even though it's accepted as such almost everywhere).
Pretty Funny how Europeans always think things work exactly like they do in their home countries now that we're all part of a happy little EU family.

>A documentation that describes the server binaries and necessary protocols to enable client to server connection is not some sort of arcane knowledge protected by copyright
Yes, yes it is.
https://www.mewburn.com/law-practice-library/software-copyright#:~:text=Computer%20software%2C%20more%20specifically%20the,associated%20with%20some%20computer%20software.

>Computer software, more specifically the program code, is protected by copyright as a ""literary work"". There may also be other types of copyright work associated with some computer software.

>The (literary) copyright in a computer program is not only infringed by taking a direct copy of the code (source code or compiled code) but also by versions of the program re-written or otherwise converted into another computer language, these being considered infringing ""adaptations"" of the original work. When you run a program on a computer there is normally some copying of the program within your computerโ€™s memory, so a copyright licence is needed: this is why when you buy computer software you are effectively buying a copyright licence to use the software and must use the software in accordance with the terms of the licence.

It really is ignorance all the way down with you people.

That was me. Dunno if you guys are retarded or something but let's roll back, the initial question is what to do if a dev goes bankrupt and doesn't have an end of life planned for a live service.
My answer is still the same but apparently retards don't understand it.
If the studio gets bought it falls to the new owner to deal with legal obligations, like for everything else. I did not mention that one since that barely counts as going bankrupt.
The second hypothesis was the studio files for what burgers know as chapter 11. This involves liquidating assets, including the game itself, ip and basically every material asset still worth something.
If the game gets bought, same as before, it falls to the new owner to deal with legal requirements, including end of life plans.
If no one buys the game, it becomes lost media either way so releasing the source code pretty much doesn't affect anyone's rights.

Yeah, so? I don't need them to be benevolent. I need them to compete with each other. You aren't asking for server tools.
You aren't asking for always online drm to be banned.
You aren't asking for service games to be regulated.
You aren't asking for developers to perpetually keep the servers alive.

What ARE you asking for?
Because it doesn't seem like you even know what you want or what that would even entail. It's like you're just blindly following someone because they said to.
Then again, this is a campaign about being able to blindly make purchases.

he figured out how to use youtube shorts algorithm worked and abused it, he openly admits this, he would make a youtube short and release it when people in tech jobs are on lunch.
Basically he timed his shorts release with a massive influx of people taking their lunch and pulling their phone out at the same time.
as for converting that to viewers on twitch, hes talking about games and accessibility into his game (people with various of colorblindness ect.) combine that with his 24/7 ferret stream he effectively always pulls viewers even those that hate him.
For the record if you are starting youtube, youtube shorts are a great way to inflate your sub numbers, its converting it to video views that requires a bit more work.

Every monopoly in history has been the result of government regulations and interference. What you are describing is impossible on the free market because a big corpo can't stomp any small startup to death. It can buy it, then another small startup pops up. So it buys that one. And one by one it becomes one huge and unmanageable behemoth that can't do anything but lose money buying startups, and eventually it fails. As we have seen time and time again, until governments stepped in and determined that some were just "too big to fail".

>because of industry inertia, they fall behind Pisscoโ€™s flagship product Pissgulp
>pissco buys them, acquiring their product
>they replace the water in Dr. Water with piss
>you buy it anyway, because they arenโ€™t required to disclose the change to customers
Dr. Water didnโ€™t have the profit margin it needed to really thrive, pissco has elevated the stock and every shareholder is happy. For a non-piss alternative, try our lead paint water flavorers, just provide your own drinking water! (Drinking wells not included)

I just vastly prefer original voices. I wouldn't be able to handle watching anime dubbed instead of subbed, for example. Unless it's a high-tier dub, which is very rare. So I rather not risk it.

There go those goalposts again no one said anything about taxes or regulations. But being the new owners wouldn't mean that they have to necessarily support the old games if they even can. If it uses third party servers for instance, those don't belong to the company that went down and may have already been repurposed/sold off/whatever. Kind of like the Nintendo WiFi servers which should be in the possession of IGN since they bought Gamespy.

No, I'm saying that in a country where the government has a monopoly on violence they will not allow big corpos to challenge it, and if they don't people will be armed and able to defend themselves.

That is because you have no idea what you are talking about and are outing yourself as an idiot. What is it that free market people tend to mention all the time? Something called the Non-Aggression Policy? Ring any bells?

Huhuh, and what do we call when the government uses its strength to prevent a company from doing whatever it wants, especially stopping them from taking extreme actions? I'll give you a hint it's start with a R.

Use your sources to support your argument (in ways the fit this particular context) if you have them. "Read up on X" or "google it" does nothing.

>You're saying that as someone who introduced the idea of being bought out.
How do you think bankrupcy works exactly? Because so far I'm not even convinced you know anything about it.

>no one said anything about taxes or regulations
Pretty retarded to ask a question about what happens when a company goes bankrupt if skg becomes a regulation then.

>If it uses third party servers for instance, those don't belong to the company that went down
True, so they wouldn't be going anywhere since it's not them going bankrupt and the new studio owner can just set up new servers with that same third party provider. The servers getting repurposed or whatever is not a challenge either. Either the game ran entirely on the code from the third party since it wouldn't be a custom job, which they wouldn't need to do anything other setting up new servers.
Or it is a custom code that the third party ran, in which case, that code is always going to have an offline back up at the studio and is part of the assets for the game, at which point the new owner can just set up new servers, either with the same server provider or a different one.

If we assume they're not just trolls, my guess would be that we're dealing with younger people who grew up in this always-online DRM hell scape. They grew up in a Steam and Ubisoft world where giant corporations decide what and when you get to play your games. They can't fathom the freedom we had.

>you can't tell the difference between decompiled code, compiled code, backend, server binaries and documentation describing the process.
It doesn't matter, it's all covered by copyright.
Right now you're just spewing whatever you can to sound legitimate instead of addressing the thing you should be which you clearly either don't understand or are just in denial about.
>in spite of Doom having its source code released years ago and neither Id nor Bethesda losing their copyright
See what I mean.
The source code for the game and the IP Doom are two entirely different things, not just one big thing unless you're suggesting that dark ages uses the original source code.
Here's a better example for you though, Nintendo owns Donkey Kong the property, the monkeys and all that, but the code for the original arcade game belonged to Ikegami Tsushinki and they attempted to sue Nintendo when they reverse engineered it for the sequels.

Are you starting to understand this a little better?

The non-aggression policy doesnโ€™t apply to citizen-products under the urine autonomous zones, unfortunately. The colaborn are natural resources dependent on Pissco for their life, and thus owe a debt to pissco for their first 60 years of existence.

I donโ€™t need to, you need a silly statist idea like โ€œthe NAPโ€ to stymie the profits of Pissco, faggot. Pissco has made several successful mercenary buyouts of several former โ€œโ€โ€statesโ€โ€โ€ that have all positively impacted the stock price. You idea is anti-capitalist.

If laws were to be passed, it would mean that when you develop a game, you'd make sure it has an EOL plan built-in. This really isn't some crazy idea. It will just be another thing added to the checklist of things you need to do release a game, which includes things like having it actually fucking work

I already do that, but somehow more games are becoming always-online, not less. I think I'll go with the solution that'll actually solve something in practice, rather than follow this mantra that doesn't seem to be working all that well
