>>713890621 (OP)โIf nature has made any one thing less susceptible than all others of exclusive property, it is the action of the thinking power called an idea, which an individual may exclusively possess as long as he keeps it to himself; but the moment it is divulged, it forces itself into the possession of everyone, and the receiver cannot dispossess himself of it. Its peculiar character, too, is that no one possesses the less, because every other possesses the whole of it. He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. That ideas should freely spread from one to another over the globe, for the moral and mutual instruction of man, and improvement of his condition, seems to have been peculiarly and benevolently designed by nature, when she made them, like fire, expansible over all space, without lessening their density in any point, and like the air in which we breathe, move, and have our physical being, incapable of confinement or exclusive appropriation. Inventions then cannot, in nature, be a subject of property.โ

WHY WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE POOR AAA COMPANIES?!
>>713896607This made me laugh much more it was supposed to.
So what is the "issue" with SKG?
Why would a normal gamer be against it?
>>713897342It is hard since some of those youtubers rely on Ubisoft sponsorships/promotional contracts etc. There is a reason why even now there's a ton of youtubers who are not talking about this. >>713897562None, that's why literally all arguments against it are completely made up lies.
>>713892941>is there a way this succeeds even if the petition failsYes. The EU is legally REQUIRED to follow up on a Citizens Initiative if it reaches thresholds.
But either Parliament or the Commission is capable of following up on an Initative regardless, if they still deem that necessary.
Given that both Parliament AND the Commission have over the course of the last year already begun to bear down on several malpractices in the videogame industry, the odds of them choosing to do so of their own volition are decidedly non-zero.

>>713897825THE PASTA THREATS ARE WORKING
If you keep giving them money then you are stating you want shit games.
>>713895193The quickest rundown possible.
We don't buy games, we buy a license of use that can be invalidated at any time.
This initiative will force the corporations to give us the possession. They cannot take it away from us legally.
Also games that die after the server shutdown should have an end-of-service plan that makes them playable offline.
If are are from EU, sign the petition. With an eID it takes like 5 clicks. If we keep the momentum, there is a chance we win.
https://www.stopkillinggames.com/
I want corporations to be forced by the hand of law to maintain their games until bankruptcy and I am not joking.
>>713897865citizen initiatives cannot be NOT vague (extremely strict word count limit)
the campaign wants to bring up to the eu parliament the issue where consumers who purchase digital goods do not enjoy legal protections from having the things you own taken away from you
HOW this needs to be solved is up to the EU parliament to draft.
>>713897694>>713897694>Why would someone who isn't an unironic shill/troll be against itHere's a copy pasta from last thread:
There was a study done which made it clear that the average "age" of a video game people are playing is somewhere between 7 and 10 years.
This, to publishers, means that they're not only competing with current games but also their old titles. Which they see as a loss of profit.
For example, there's at least 100k people still playing Diablo 2 (combined across the original and remaster). Publishers believe that this is 100k-200k less players playing Diablo 4, which is a loss of at least 5-10 million USD. Which is why, in this case, Blizzard has released Diablo 4 with always-online DRM and mostly server-side game logic. This way when they end the game's servers, their customers will be "forced" to buy Diablo 5 or Diablo 6.
>>713898059And there will be a lot of signatures that will be found to be invalid so it needs a lot more than one million to actually pass.
>>713897703>>713897925for example, if Germany had Estonia's per capita signature rate of 0.34% they would be at 283,000 signatures, or 418% threshold
>>713893407>talking the enemy's language>not knowing your own languagecucked
>>713898242How come the thresholds are so skewed then?
>>713894446Devs had 10 dollars to develop games back then on their computers in Uncle Rudy's basement next to his dildo collection.
All of those games are still playable today, including every single multiplayer game.

>>713898302The threshold is calculated by the country's number of MEPs multiplied by the total number of MEPs in the EU parliament. Smaller countries have proportionally more MEPs relative to their population so the threshold ends up higher relative to population.
>>713897660Yes, I'm sure they were running out of excuses to increases prices by now.
>>713898114>This initiative will force the corporations to give us the possession. No you retard, it would make it so we can keep playing the games we bought by having the always online reuirements removed if their something like an item shop or force companies help users get the means to set up private servers after the comapny pulls the plug on the offical servers and no longer profits from the game.
>>713897660Publishers determine price, not devs. And they don't actually set the price long term, because they can only sell for what people are willing to buy for. Do you somehow think that publishers wouldn't raise prices if they think they could?

Another loophole in killing the original game and releasing an inferior yet cheaper port/remake since the current stipulations only cover the game and not specific versions.
The fact that this initiative calls for property to be taken from developers under specific conditions, i.e. giving up server tools, which could compromise other games.

There may also be other types of copyright work associated with some computer software.>The (literary) copyright in a computer program is not only infringed by taking a direct copy of the code (source code or compiled code) but also by versions of the program re-written or otherwise converted into another computer language, these being considered infringing ""adaptations"" of the original work. >>713900287That was me. Dunno if you guys are retarded or something but let's roll back, the initial question is what to do if a dev goes bankrupt and doesn't have an end of life planned for a live service.
My answer is still the same but apparently retards don't understand it.
If the studio gets bought it falls to the new owner to deal with legal obligations, like for everything else. I did not mention that one since that barely counts as going bankrupt.
The second hypothesis was the studio files for what burgers know as chapter 11. This involves liquidating assets, including the game itself, ip and basically every material asset still worth something.
If the game gets bought, same as before, it falls to the new owner to deal with legal requirements, including end of life plans.
If no one buys the game, it becomes lost media either way so releasing the source code pretty much doesn't affect anyone's rights.

>>713903274Like I said, has been tried, failed spectacularly. Read up on Herbert Dow.
>So you're literally saying that the only thing stopping big companies from going down on smaller ones are government intervention. Good job contradicting yourself in one post. No, I'm saying that in a country where the government has a monopoly on violence they will not allow big corpos to challenge it, and if they don't people will be armed and able to defend themselves.
You, on the other hand, seem to think that there is no difference between making harming others illegal and the government regulating the market so that their preferred companies that they just happen to have stock in comes out on top.
>>713893194You have no idea what SKG is retard
>>713899741>even in universities I had english classes teaching extremely basic englishI did a year of exchange studies in France while at university and two French students asked me to listen to their presentations and give tips for their English class. It was pretty funny when they were at an elementary school level compared to my Scandi country. They were in tech, but I guess the French industry is large enough that you can survive on mostly French throughout your working life.
>>713903549Think of the 6 gorrillion game developers who died in the holocaust.
>>713903423Walmart what? Walmart doesn't have a monopoly you retard.
>>713903572Statist bootlicker. You deserved to have your โgovernmentโ executed in the Cola Wars for the good of the free market.
>>713903546>stop large companies from doing whatever they want to smaller onesNo, to stop anyone from doing harm to others. Not the same thing, retard.
>>713903302the law sometimes saves the idiots from themselves, you can't trust the average idiot to have their own best interests in mind
>>713903710Sounds like an arbitrary statist restriction on the path of the free market.
>>713903730Why should you retards be saved from yourselves? I want less of you, not more of you.
>>713903792That is because you have no idea what you are talking about and are outing yourself as an idiot. What is it that free market people tend to mention all the time? Something called the Non-Aggression Policy? Ring any bells?
>>713903572Huhuh, and what do we call when the government uses its strength to prevent a company from doing whatever it wants, especially stopping them from taking extreme actions? I'll give you a hint it's start with a R.
>>713903572Use your sources to support your argument (in ways the fit this particular context) if you have them. "Read up on X" or "google it" does nothing.
>>713903730>you now remember AlterIWnetGood times
>>713902727>You're saying that as someone who introduced the idea of being bought out.How do you think bankrupcy works exactly? Because so far I'm not even convinced you know anything about it.
>no one said anything about taxes or regulationsPretty retarded to ask a question about what happens when a company goes bankrupt if skg becomes a regulation then.
>If it uses third party servers for instance, those don't belong to the company that went downTrue, so they wouldn't be going anywhere since it's not them going bankrupt and the new studio owner can just set up new servers with that same third party provider. The servers getting repurposed or whatever is not a challenge either. Either the game ran entirely on the code from the third party since it wouldn't be a custom job, which they wouldn't need to do anything other setting up new servers.
Or it is a custom code that the third party ran, in which case, that code is always going to have an offline back up at the studio and is part of the assets for the game, at which point the new owner can just set up new servers, either with the same server provider or a different one.
We could have made real progress for consumer rights, I can't believe one narcissistic furry roach's ego stopped it
Why did Ross wait until now to tell the truth?
>>713903302If we assume they're not just trolls, my guess would be that we're dealing with younger people who grew up in this always-online DRM hell scape. They grew up in a Steam and Ubisoft world where giant corporations decide what and when you get to play your games. They can't fathom the freedom we had.
> 24k+ added today
and there is still 6 more hours, would be nice if the petition got nice rounded 30k before end of the day
>>713903954>You don't understand! I wish to remain ignorant!
>>713903419>you can't tell the difference between decompiled code, compiled code, backend, server binaries and documentation describing the process. It doesn't matter, it's all covered by copyright.
Right now you're just spewing whatever you can to sound legitimate instead of addressing the thing you should be which you clearly either don't understand or are just in denial about.
>in spite of Doom having its source code released years ago and neither Id nor Bethesda losing their copyright See what I mean.
The source code for the game and the IP Doom are two entirely different things, not just one big thing unless you're suggesting that dark ages uses the original source code.
Here's a better example for you though, Nintendo owns Donkey Kong the property, the monkeys and all that, but the code for the original arcade game belonged to Ikegami Tsushinki and they attempted to sue Nintendo when they reverse engineered it for the sequels.
Are you starting to understand this a little better?
>>713903951The non-aggression policy doesnโt apply to citizen-products under the urine autonomous zones, unfortunately. The colaborn are natural resources dependent on Pissco for their life, and thus owe a debt to pissco for their first 60 years of existence.
>>713904119Yeah, keep making up scenarios to justify why you need to keep licking the government boot
>>713899684>dude we can't afford to keep the servers up, we're bankruptGood fucking thing SKG isn't asking for that, then
>>713904072It seems to me that you don't even know the contents of your own source or how it could applies and could be interpreted in relation to this case. No, I'm not going to "read up on" your dumb shit unless you tell me how it's relevant.
>>713904204I donโt need to, you need a silly statist idea like โthe NAPโ to stymie the profits of Pissco, faggot. Pissco has made several successful mercenary buyouts of several former โโโstatesโโโ that have all positively impacted the stock price. You idea is anti-capitalist.
>>713904281It seems to me that you are an idiot who refuses to learn anything unless spoonfed. I don't care if you understand why you are wrong when you bring up the "predatory prices" meme, just the same as I don't care about flat earth retards.
>>713904428Can you at least tell me what does this mythical "Herbert Dow" deal with, specifically?
>>713899064If laws were to be passed, it would mean that when you develop a game, you'd make sure it has an EOL plan built-in. This really isn't some crazy idea. It will just be another thing added to the checklist of things you need to do release a game, which includes things like having it actually fucking work
>>713904568Or you could just not buy games that would require an EoL plan in the first place.
>>713904681Itโs a shame that it became profitable to killswitch old titles to force adoption of new games then huh
>>713904681I already do that, but somehow more games are becoming always-online, not less. I think I'll go with the solution that'll actually solve something in practice, rather than follow this mantra that doesn't seem to be working all that well
