Western fantasy used to be good in the 70's/80's when you had kitchen sinks like gonzo fantasy or the more moderate but still enjoyable dark fantasy of a lot of YA literature where writers didn't feel obligated to suck Tolkien's cock.
Ironically, even 1E D&D and AD&D didn't suck too much cock back in the days because while there certain was a lot of Tolkien worship the brand was still rooted in a lot of classical nerd fantasy, stuff like Runequest or Gamma World were still better though.
Nowadays it sucks because D&D got too big for its own good, Tolkien worship got even worse thanks to the movies and the industry in general is a cesspool where anybody who doesn't conform to the lowest common denominator isn't going to make it because all that matters is milking normalfags, and you can't do that by being original or trying new things, you must have your humans/green humans/short humans/snobby humans/devil humans/fursuit humans/scaly humans for some reason.
Granted, it's not ALL like that and some of that is actually not that bad either, but it does get tiresome, and to be fair the east isn't really that better either, for every Emerald Beyond there's 5 Isekai Final Panty Quests.
