yeah it's a problem with most 3D games. only solution I can think of is locking doors so you're forced to fight, but that can feel very odd, like why does me killing every enemy in the room magically open this locked door
DMC does it and can get away with it because it's a magical barrier effect, but obviously that wouldn't work for RE4
I guess the incentive to not just run past all the enemies in RE4 is that the combat is fun, and enemies drop gold and ammo which will both help you beat mandatory bosses
