I've realized that the only way to make the series engaging is self-imposed rules. Set mode, no items in battle, only grinding if you absolutely hit a brick wall. On top of that I try not to use coolmons/shillmons, I always incorporate some dex-fillers into my team.

You could also play some Vanilla+ hacks like Renegade Platinum or Eternal X/Wilting Y.
