they didnt. they executed him. detached him from life support systems and dumped him literally into the sewer, where he would drown almost immediately. even if he had survived and crawled his ass out of the sewer, then what? no food, water, not even clothing in a fucking hellish landscape. he dies from exposure in hours.
the robots werent expecting someone to be intercepting the exchange. injecting themselves into the system at a weak, unprotected spot. like a computer hacker attacking a server, using code injection, or something. oh gosh it kinda fits the theme. huh.
look up the bleeding hearts exploit. major, intergalactic sized hole in security that worked on so many fucking things ever and its basically because someone realized "oh. i tell the server where the data im looking for, and how many bits long it should be. and it doesnt verify HOW many bits im allowed to ask for. oh. i can just...ask for a million. and see the 999,950 bits of data that come after the 50 i was supposed to only request. oh. this works....almost anywhere...".
an operating system has about 15 million lines of code. some of it hasnt been fiddled with for almost 20 years. there only has to be one mistake in that, and it all falls apart.
