Because Star Wars "fans" didn't actually watch the movies, or maybe watched them once and don't remember shit about them. They made up some weird head-canon in their head, where droids are these deadly, scary terminators, when in reality that never happened, and they were always cheap, ineffective, with their only advantage being numbers, and they have always been used for comic relief.
