Usually "actually being boring is part of his personality" isn't good or interesting writing, and it really shows...
I like to do the "what if this character was ugly?" to get a good idea of how well written a character is, and honestly I think absolutely no one would care about Hong Lu even a little bit if he looked like me(grotesque).
